Tips for healthy hair this summer

Enjoying long afternoons outdoors is a highlight of the summer season. However, it’s important to be mindful of protecting our hair, as just like our skin it is prone to sun damage. Too much sun can break down the protein in our hair cells, and the heat draws out moisture. A combination of the two can be damaging, leaving you with spit ends and dry, faded and brittle locks.

Here are our best tips for taking care of your hair this summer:

Use plant-based products and wash your hair less.

Replenish sun kissed tresses by investing in a gentler hair care routine. Some products contain harsh ingredients that strip the hair and scalp of its natural oils, which are produced to protect against the weather and hot styling tools. You may think a daily shampoo is keeping your hair extra clean, however, over washing can also prevent natural oils from doing their job, so try to increase the number of days between washes if you can.

Wear a hat

A wide-brimmed hat is great for protecting both your hair and skin from potentially damaging rays. You can also protect your strands by wearing a hair wrap, or your hair up in a bun, hiding the ends, which are generally the weakest part of the strand and more susceptible to damage.

Keep your hair well moisturised

We love using coconut oil to combat the suns drying properties. Rub a small amount onto your hands and apply to the ends of dry hair. It can also be used to tame any fly-away strands. This natural remedy has a high capacity for retaining moisture, reducing the risk of breakage.

Let your hair dry naturally
Take a break from the blow dry during and embrace air drying your hair during summer. Start by blotting wet hair gently with a soft towel, then gently comb in a downward motion to avoid any tangles.

Cold water makes for glossy hair
Hair follicles condense in cold water, creating a smoother surface for light to reflect off, giving the appearance of shiny hair. After conditioning, try having a refreshingly cool rinse.

Pamper yourself with a DIY hair treatment
Enjoy a little pampering at home with our inexpensive hair treatment, or experiment with a recipe of your own. These can be applied every other week:
Mix 1 tsp of light oil (sunflower or canola), ½ a cup of flat beer and a raw egg. Apply to clean, damp hair and let sit for 15 minutes before rinsing with cool water.

I agree with this, 'let your hair dry naturally'. Hair dryers can really dry-up your hair especially when done regularly. Thanks for sharing these helpful tips. Will surely use them.
