Could you be suffering from adrenal fatigue?

Adrenal fatigue is a term coined 16 years ago by Canadian doctor, scientist and lecturer Dr James L Wilson, to describe feelings of exhaustion and a range of associated symptoms.

Here are some of the others you might want to check to find out if you have adrenal fatigue:

  • Increased symptoms of PMS or menopause
  • Skin issues
  • Problems with mood, like depression
  • Lowered immunity
  • Tiredness
  • Stress
  • Cravings for caffeine or stimulants like sugar Your adrenal glands produce hormones that have many important functions, like making energy from the foods we eat, regulating our blood pressure levels, responding to stress, and normalising our blood sugar. Sleep deprivatation, injury, illnesses, nutritional deficiencies and over-exercising are some of the things that can place your adrenal glands under stress. When these glands start to function inadequately, that’s linked to prolonged stress, infections, or exposure to toxic chemicals over a long period of time.

How to recover proper adrenal function

Fatigue is a symptom in conditions like anaemia, diabetes, depression, fibromyalgia, thyroid problems, hormone-related illness and cardiac disease – and there are other afflictions associated with the adrenal glands. Those include the even more serious condition Addison’s Disease, also known as adrenal insufficiency. It’s a good option to consult a health professional to see what’s causing your fatigue and stress, and look at changes you might be able to make in your everyday life. Then you can begin to address the causes of your tiredness, and do things like increasing your rest, exercising regularly and maintaining a healthy diet. Also, eating small amounts of food regularly can keep blood sugar levels normal.
