Child Labor Free: making a difference with inspiring new projects
On Sunday June 12 it’s World Day Against Child Labor. There’s over 150 million children trapped in child labour around the world, and to raise awareness, ecostore is teaming up with the Child Labor Free Foundation in support of their latest project with Freeset.
Freeset is a fair trade business who make organic cotton t-shirts and jute bags. They seek to provide freedom by offering employment to women trapped in Kolkata’s sex trade. The organization has also set up a loom factory, providing jobs for women who are considered at a high risk of being sold or trafficked.
Child Labor Free Foundation (CLFF) collaborated with Freeset to develop and operate an early childhood centre that will provide care and education for the children of the women working in the loom factory as well as those still having to work in the sex trade. Together they are striving to provide positive outcomes for the families in the local area and once the centre is built, Child Labor Free are committed to providing ongoing support and advice around its operation.
This is such an important initiative, as there are around 5.7 million child workers in India. CLFF believe in empowering consumers to recognize brands that don’t use child labour, and to ensure that child labour doesn’t exist in their supply chains. They have developed the world’s first global accreditation system to inspect companies and their supply chain for the use of child labour across all product categories.
Last year ecostore manufacturing was certified Child Labor Free to guarantee that children aren’t exploited for their work as our products are made. From 6 – 12 June we’ll be donating 5% of our online and Auckland store sales to the Child Labor Free Foundation to support their amazing work. We hope you’ll buy our products during this time to help us get behind such a great cause.
As Child Labor Free launches into Europe, starting with the UK, it is asking people to say no to #allworknoplay. We couldn’t agree more, which is why we’ve decided to give these proceeds to the foundation. Will you join us in making a difference?
