Wellness when you’re back at work
Posted On January 13th, 2017

Although the festive season often brings good times and great memories, it can leave some of us feeling in need of more sleep and self-care. In fact, three in four of us admit to feeling stressed about returning to their desks after the holidays.

Arriving back to work with a full inbox and seemingly endless tasks to catch up on can seem daunting, and it’s easy to let health and wellness fall by the wayside when we’re feeling overwhelmed. However, prioritising our wellbeing is key for working productively, managing stress levels and creating work/life balance.

With the summer holiday season coming to an end, we’ve put together our top five tips to help you get back into office mode and keep well at work. If you’ve got any suggestions to add, do leave us a comment below.

  1. Create a morning routine

Your morning routine can set the tone for the day, so if you want to stay motivated, it’s important to begin on a positive note. Fitting in some exercise and eating a nourishing breakfast are great ways to start. Even if you only have time for a 15 minute workout, getting moving can help to boost your mood and productivity levels. The brain needs glucose to stay alert and focussed, and even if you don’t like eating first thing, you can still get your morning nutrition by whipping up a healthy smoothie to enjoy on the way to work.

  1. Make your space your own

Research has shown that an organised desk and personalising are linked to improved productivity. An indoor plant and a selection of pictures can be all it takes, or a pin-board filled with photos and messages is a nice touch too.

  1. Prioritise your workload

Write a to-do list with the most important tasks at the top to help focus your time and energy on high value activities and keep track of everything you need to get done. This way everything is documented in one place, which will help with feeling more organised and planning each day.

  1. Stand up and stretch

Studies suggest that prolonged sitting can have a negative effect on our health, so if you’re office bound, remember to regularly get up and move around. The Mayo Clinic recommend this series of simple stretches to keep your blood pumping and prevent muscles from feeling sore and tight.

  1. Reward yourself

Whether it’s by going out for dinner, enjoying a relaxing bath or treating yourself to something you’ve had your eye on, find time to reward yourself after having a successful day or completing a difficult project.
